TLC Residence

The remodelling of the old service spaces of the TLC residence, a house of the beginning of the twentieth century, aims at responding to the functional requirements of contemporary life.
The new arrangement takes full advantage of the space available, giving place to the kitchen, a toilet and vestibule, and a laundry area.
The new functional order is enhanced by a visual order resting on material sobriety and rigorous stereotomy. White Portuguese Estremoz marble, white plaster, white kitchen furniture, provide a serene atmosphere and the support for the contingency of daily life, while maximizing the reflection of the light coming from the few openings available. Window frames are redesigned with the same purpose, replacing the old frames with a thin steel frame painted black, thus augmenting the glazed surface.
The toilet is entirely finished in white Estremoz marble, from the floor to the walls and even the ceiling. The wash basin, a half sphere carved from a parallelepipedic block of the same marble, sets the conceptual tone of this small space: a carved space.
A play of mirrors, one in front of the basin, one in front of the toilet, amplifies the sense of space and creates an illusion of repetition, avoiding the mise en abyme effect.

A remodelação dos antigos espaços serventes da residência TLC, uma casa do início do século XX, visa responder às exigências funcionais da vida contemporânea.
A nova disposição aproveita ao máximo o espaço disponível, dando lugar à cozinha, a uma casa de banho, a um vestíbulo e a uma zona de lavandaria.
A nova ordem funcional é reforçada por uma ordem visual que assenta sobre a sobriedade material e uma estereotomia rigorosa. O mármore branco português de Estremoz, juntamente com o gesso e o mobiliário de cozinha brancos, proporcionam uma atmosfera serena para suportar a contingência da vida quotidiana, maximizando ao mesmo tempo o reflexo da luz proveniente das poucas aberturas disponíveis. As molduras das janelas foram redesenhadas com a mesma finalidade, substituindo-se as antigas por uma mais delgada, de aço pintado de preto, optimizando assim a superfície de vidro.
A zona de banhos é totalmente acabada em mármore branco de Estremoz – pavimento, paredes e tecto. O lavatório é o negativo de uma meia esfera, esculpido num bloco paralelepipédico do mesmo material, e define o tom conceptual deste pequeno espaço: um espaço esculpido.
Um jogo de espelhos - um dos quais em frente ao lavatório e outro em frente à sanita – aumenta a sensação de espaço e cria uma ilusão de repetição, evitando causar o efeito de mise en abyme.
