The project’s main programmatic intention was to restore and convert the three-storey building into a performance venue and a live music bar, while preserving its original character.
The underlying idea, then, was to limit the intervention to a minimum disruption accentuating some original features of the space.
The strategy was to intervene in main key elements: the door at the bottom of the stairs, the ticket booth, the curtain marking the transition between the foyer and the main performance room, the bar counter and the stage curtain.
Taking its inspiration from the old “black box” performative spaces of the 60s and 70s, the walls of the main room were painted black not only to enhance the sombreness of the performances but also to counterpoint an unusual fact in this type of closed space: the large windows opening to the outside and reflecting the street lighting.
In contrast to this black box, the stairwell and the foyer adjacent to it are treated in different colours – white walls permeated by sheer elements of wood.
A dramatic element marks the passage between ambiences, between moods, from the life outside into a more intimate ambience, like the one of a clandestine New York jazz bar: the curtain. Carefully designed and suspended from a round shape rail, it has the same ability and significance as that of a stage curtain.
Every element new to this space was designed to seem as if it had always belonged to it. The chairs, the tables and stools – also designed for this project –, they all belong to the same animated décor with subtle but precise finishing and details. The lamps and their location are also submitted to the same attention.
With an industrial style, they have been placed upon a rigorously metric grid.
All the floors have been kept in their original condition as a way of inviting the many different lives of the space to play an active role in the same piece.

A principal intenção programática do Projecto era restaurar e converter um edifício de três andares num lugar de espectáculos performativos e um bar de música ao vivo, preservando em simultâneo o seu carácter original.
A ideia subjacente seria, assim, limitar a intervenção ao mínimo, acentuando algumas características pré-existentes.
A estratégia passou por intervir nos principais elementos-chave: a porta, ao fundo das escadas, a bilheteira, a cortina que marca a transição entre o foyer e a sala de espectáculos principal, o balcão do bar e a cortina do palco.
Inspiradas nas antigas black box performativas dos anos ‘60 e ‘70, as paredes da sala principal foram pintadas de preto, não só para realçar a atmosfera melancólica das actuações, como para contrapor uma questão menos vulgar neste tipo de espaço encerrado: as grandes janelas que se abrem desde o exterior e deixam entrar a luz da rua.
Em contraste com a black box, a escadaria e o foyer adjacentes são tratados em tons diferentes: paredes brancas, atravessadas por elementos de madeira.
Um outro elemento, dramático, marca a passagem entre ambientes, desde o mundo exterior até um ambiente mais íntimo, como o de um bar clandestino de jazz em Nova Iorque: a cortina. Cuidadosamente pensada e suspensa por um perfil curvo, tendo a mesma função e significado que a cortina de palco.
Cada elemento novo neste espaço foi concebido de forma a não destoar, dando a entender que sempre fez parte do mesmo. As cadeiras, as mesas e os bancos – igualmente desenhados para fazer parte deste espaço –, também fazem parte desta animada décor com acabamentos e detalhes subtis, mas precisos. Os candeeiros e a sua localização são também submetidos ao mesmo cuidado. Procurando um estilo industrial, foram rigorosamente colocados sobre uma grelha métrica.
Todos os pavimentos foram mantidos na sua condição original, como forma de convidar as diferentes vidas do espaço a desempenharem um papel activo numa mesma peça.
