The renovation design of this apartment lies in a main organization principle based on a core space – the foyer. This central area of distribution allows the project to sublimate all the circulation spaces, emphasising its character as an arrival and departure core, where all paths cross. With a balanced dimension, its flexible character allows it to be used as a reception area or as an extension of one of the bedrooms or living rooms.
The wooden finishing of the walls and ceiling of the foyer subtly conceals the access doors to the remaining spaces and storage cabinets. The warm Riga wood is also used in the floor, offering a coherent material discourse when moving through the different rooms and living areas of the residence. In contrast, the service areas have an ascetic look and are designed as purely functional spaces: kitchen, laundry and bathroom areas are clad in white Calacatta marble slabs.
As a result of the minimalistic design and obsessively white furniture, these spaces acquire an abstract character, highlighted by the marble stone’s signature: the thick grey veining.
The furniture is an essential part of the design, integrating the architectural reasoning present in very detail: the wardrobes in the rooms bypass the doors and windows, visually reducing the perception of the ceiling height, the counter in the living room connects to a small window establishing not only a visual connection but also allowing the light to go through it towards the foyer, the bathroom’s cabinet alignment is interrupted to give way to another small window.
As part of this integrative design, the wooden frames of the windows have been also redesigned, as well as the exterior blinds which were fully remade in asian afzelia wood slats identical to the original ones.
Sophistication, consistency and precision in details are the keywords ruling this project where the materials, through their intrinsic and contrasting characteristics, play a main role in the organization and in the overall home environment.

O Projecto de renovação deste apartamento assenta num princípio de organização baseado num espaço central – o foyer. Esta zona de distribuição permite a sublimação de todos os espaços de circulação, enfatizando a sua função como núcleo de chegada e de partida da habitação, onde todos os caminhos se cruzam. Com dimensões equilibradas, o seu carácter flexível permite com que seja utilizado como área de recepção ou como uma extensão de um dos quartos ou salas de estar.
O acabamento das paredes em madeira e do tecto do foyer, dissimula subtilmente as portas de acesso aos restantes espaços bem como dos armários de arrumação. A madeira quente de Riga é também utilizada para o chão, oferecendo um discurso coerente ao nível da materialidade aquando a deslocação entre as diferentes divisões da casa. Em contraste, as zonas de serviço procuram um aspecto ascético e são concebidas puramente como espaços funcionais: as áreas de cozinha, lavandaria e instalações sanitárias são revestidas em placas de mármore Calacatta branco.
O mobiliário é uma parte essencial do desenho, integrando o raciocínio arquitectónico presente em todos os detalhes: os roupeiros dos quartos contornam as portas e as janelas, reduzindo visualmente a percepção da altura do tecto; o balcão na sala de estar liga-se a uma pequena janela estabelecendo, não só uma conexão visual, mas também permitindo que a luz se atravesse até ao foyer; o alinhamento do armário da casa-de-banho é interrompido para dar lugar a outra pequena janela.
Como parte deste desenho integrado, as molduras das janelas foram também redesenhadas, bem como as persianas exteriores totalmente refeitas em ripas de madeira de Afizélia asiática, idênticas às originais.
Sofisticação, consistência e precisão nos detalhes são as palavras-chave que regem esta obra, onde os materiais, através das suas características intrínsecas e contrastantes, desempenham um papel crucial na organização e no ambiente doméstico geral.
